Weymouth & Portland Open Bowls Tournament welcomes you to our web site where you will find all the Tournament information you need. If you are contemplating entering the Tournament and it is all new to you please have a look at our history page where you will discover how, over the past 51-years, it has grown into what is now recognised as one of the best Tournaments on the South Coast.
For many years a major sponsor of the Tournament has been the Weymouth & Portland Borough Council but the recent financial situation the Country as a whole finds itself in has been reflected in the amount of sponsorship the Borough has been able to provide following the Council annual budget review. Accordingly the Council have cut their usual amount of sponsorship this year, and we understand for the forseeable future, by 50%. Your Tournament Committee have therefore, in financial terms, had a difficult battle to ensure the viability of the Tournament whilst ensuring that we can still offer both affordable entry fees and attractive prize monies. The decision has therefore been taken not to offer prize monies to all competion loosing semi-finalists. Prize monies will still be paid to all competition winners and runners-up and it is hoped that the level of prize monies at stake will still be at the same level as previous years. We are continuing discussions with our usual sponsors and potential new sponsors to ensure we can achieve this objective but until these discussions are complete and we have a clearer picture of the final number of entries to each competition we cannot confirm what the exact amount of prize money in each competition will be. Rest assured however that the final prize monies will still be attractive and remember that the Tournament offers a great opportunity to both make new friends and rekindle old friendships whilst providing a weeks bowling at a minimal charge of £3.00 / person / competition.
Like many Tournaments across the Country we have noticed a gradual decline in entry numbers over the years. Many Tournaments have, like the more local Poole Tournament, become history but we have managed to survive and your Committee has every intention of ensuring that the Tournament will continue to operate in the years to come. Remember however that our future survival depends upon your continuing support and participation.
We are pleased to report that the Co-Operative Funeral Care have decided to retain their usual amount of sponsorship monies and will once agin be sponsoring the prestigeous Men's Singles Competition. The Mixed Pairs competition has grown in popularity since its introduction and entry numbers are already at a high level. Remember entry numbers to this competition are restricted so don't delay in submitting your entry form if you want to be assured of an entry in this competition. The Ladies Pairs competition however in recent years has shown a decline in entry numbers and unless more entries are received in the coming months your Committee may be forced to cancel this competition in 2011.
The Tournament still offers the following competitions that you can participate in:
Men’s Singles / Men’s Pairs / Men’s Triples
Ladies Pairs / Mixed Pairs
18-Years & Under Open Singles.
Don’t worry if you enter and are eliminated from all competitions in the early rounds because there is another competition you can enter where you can still win exciting prize monies – The Springfield Cup. Dependant on entry numbers this competition may be played as a drawn Pairs or Triples.
The Tournament Competitions are played on the 3-Weymouth greens namely:
- Weymouth & Melcombe Regis Bowls Club
- Wellworthy Bowls Club
- Greenhill Bowls Club
Take a look at our venues page where you will find details of each of the greens, photographs and maps showing where they are located in the Town.
